Monster File Folder Texture Plates

Wow! These texture plates are easy to make and kids really love using them! Check how I made cute monsters even cuter with my DIY texture plates and recycled crayons. Two great ways to save money in the art room!

Kids love drawing monsters and monsters are a great way to get your students to try some new things!  I've got some posts about using monsters to teach about color.  

In this post, I'll show you how to use monsters to teach about textures and adjectives.

First, let's talk texture!  Making texture rubbings is fun and easy!

You can always buy texture rubbing plates, but if you are on a tight budget, here is an almost free way to create your own texture plates.

I found some used file folders and just glued labels over the old writing.  

You can download my texture labels for free. 

I cut the file folders in half at the fold.  I used the half with the label tab as the background and the other piece to cut up and make the textures.  I swapped colors so that I was using a different color to make the textures than the background.  

Here are some of the textures I created,  I think you'll get the idea after you see a couple.  You don't have to make yours look like mine.  You could even have your students make their own page, or pages to share with younger students.

All of the textures are labeled with adjectives.  They are the same adjectives I use for the Monster Drawing pages. This is a fun way to integrate art with language arts.
