The Week Before Winter Break ... Help!

3 Easy one-day Christmas drawing art lessons that will delight your students! I'll show you step by step 3 ideas for combining basic art supplies to create cute art projects that will keep kids engaged right up to the holiday!

This is the time of the year when fun, easy and quick are keywords for keeping your sanity and engaging your students!  The drawing tutorials in Winter Drawing Fun include these 3 Christmas themed ideas.  Like all of my drawing pages, students will get lots of choices.  This makes drawing fun and gives your students more control over the outcome. 

Using just 2 different kinds of media or art supplies can dramatically change how an art project turns out.  The contrast in mediums makes the drawings pop!  Changing medium gives students more variety and keeps them from getting bored from coloring the entire page the same way.  For all of the examples, I used just plain copy paper.

I've selected basic art supplies: colored pencils, colored markers, and watercolors to show you 3 ideas that most classes could complete in one art lesson.  The length of your art class and age level make effect this a little.  Although I've always been surprised at how much longer 5th graders want to spend on a project versus the younger grades.  The Winter Drawing Fun set includes a quick start page that has a frame on it with the start of a drawing.  This will help you get students off to a fast start and keep students working at a similar pace. Students can still make all of their own design choices from the drawing pages. 

 For the elf drawing, I drew in pencil, then outlined with a Sharpie marker.  In the 3rd step (show above) I added a marker outline with Crayola colored markers.  I also colored in a few areas, including the face with a colored marker.

To complete the project (shown on top), I added colored pencil.  Outlining with a colored marker first helps make the colored pencil look neater and gives it a little pop of contrast.  

 For the gingerbread man, I went over my pencil lines with a Sharpie marker, then colored in the icing with crayons.  Be sure to push firmly with the crayons and go back and forth over each area several times.  I then used watercolors to gently paint over the gingerbread man and frame.  Be sure that students are getting the watercolors nice and wet and not pushing too hard with their brushes. 

 Drawing the Nutcracker is a little tricky. The quick start template will really help keep students on track if you are trying to accomplish this in one class.  I used a Sharpie marker for the black outline, then used colored Crayola markers to outline each area (same as the elf). For the final step, I painted inside each area with watercolors.  A smaller brush will probably come in handy for this step.

I hope you enjoy giving these lessons a try and that it helps you sail into the Christmas holiday with flying colors ...  well not literally!  That would be a mess!
